How much does it cost to hire a skip in the UK?
Skip hire UK prices
When you have lots of waste to get rid of, hiring a skip is a simple and convenient way to have it removed from your property. There are different-sized skips available to hire, and the price for hiring one will vary on the following:
- The size of skip you need
- How long you need to hire the skip for
- Your UK postcode
- Whether you need a permit
- If you have prohibited items that charge extra, e.g. mattresses
What is the skip hire UK price range for different skip sizes?
When looking at skip hire UK prices, the size you need will determine the skip hire cost. Smaller midi skips are less expensive than the builder, and maxi skips as the capacity is lower. When your skip is collected, it is then taken to the waste management facility so the waste can be recycled. The more waste you have, the longer this process will take the company to sort through and manage.
Recycling as much waste as possible is essential to every waste management company, and most currently recycle over 90% of waste from their skips.

Skip hire UK prices with a council permit
If you do not have a driveway or other private land to deliver your skip, you will need to have it placed on a public road. Local councils are responsible for issuing skip permits, and they have the right to deny a permit if they feel the skip will obstruct the road. For example, most councils will not allow a skip to be placed on double yellow lines or a narrow road.
Our customer services team will apply for a permit from your local council on your behalf, but please be aware that some councils take longer to respond than others. If you request a specific date when booking your skip, their response time can cause delays in your skip hire being delivered. You will be made aware of any potential delays as soon as our team are made aware.
The cheapest locations for hiring a skip in the UK include Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Newcastle and Lincoln. This is based on permit costs and supplier prices and is subject to change throughout busy seasonal periods.
Skip hire costs by region
The price to hire a skip will vary depending on where you live, and each city will charge differently based on your postcode and how far you live from the waste management facility. London and Gloucester are the most expensive places to hire a skip in the UK. This is because permit costs are high for these areas, especially in London, as houses are less likely to have private driveways, and the skips could obstruct busy tourist streets and built-up areas. For these areas, we recommend a wait and load service or a man with a van to avoid applying for a permit.
However, if you travel further North, regions like Scotland and the North of England have much lower skip hire prices. For example, it will cost roughly £380.00 to hire a 6 yard skip in London, while in Sheffield, you’re looking at around £250.00 for the same size skip.
Skip hire duration
How long you need the skip hire for will also affect the price you pay. When you book your skip hire with us, you pay for 7 days hire from when the skip gets delivered. If you need to extend this, you will need to pay £15.00 per extra week.
If you have a skip hire permit, you will also need to pay to renew this if you extend your hire. Some locations, such as Gloucester, will charge per extra day you need the skip. This can turn out quite costly, so it’s best to chat with us, and we will explain the total cost to you and try and find the cheapest workaround, which may be a wait and load or man with a van.
Are there any other fees or prices that you should prepare for?
There should be no hidden fees when hiring a skip. Something to check before you book is that you are looking at an inc. VAT price to avoid any surprises in the checkout. You can toggle the VAT to exclude and include it in the top right corner of our website.
You’re responsible for the waste that is put into your skip. If the skip is collected and there are prohibited items that we charge extra for, this may be passed on to you. Similarly, you are responsible for ensuring the skip is accessible when the drivers arrive to collect it. If there are obstructions, including cars or private gates, leading to us not being able to collect the skip, you may incur a wasted journey charge.
Items you cannot put into your skip
Most waste can go into skips, but there are some items that we cannot accept due to them being hazardous. The things we cannot accept can usually be taken to your local tip or collected by your council upon request.
The following household objects are not allowed in your skip hire:
- Asbestos
- Batteries
- Clinical, Medical, or Human Waste
- Fridges/Freezers
- Electrical items
